The Challenge
Danger Mouse is nostalgic IP with strong visual identity, but the BBC needed a fresh take that would resonate with modern audiences—particularly kids and teens raised on visually dynamic, fast-paced content. The key challenge was the style: how to keep the classic 2D characters while placing them in a London that feels real, exciting, and new.
My Role
Concept & Layout designer
The development went through a structured visual exploration phase:
First Pass:
Early concept sketches focused on capturing iconic London landmarks with a traditional setup, grounding the world in recognizability.
Second Pass:
Introduced more dynamic compositions and stronger forced perspectives, hinting at a more animated, energetic version of London.
Third Pass:
Experimented with exaggerated forms, extreme camera angles, and playful layouts to better match the show's humor, action, and energy.
Fourth Pass:
Refined the perspective Layout and solidified a dynamic viewpoint — prioritising storytelling through heightened visual tension and excitement.
Final Concept Locked:
Integrated real photography of London with stylised animated elements.
Colour grading and palette development were critical in creating a seamless blend between the real and the animated.
We established a vibrant, high-energy palette with selectively heightened saturation and contrast to support the comedic tone and action.
Atmospheric lighting was fine-tuned scene by scene to unify mood, create depth, and enhance storytelling beats.
Extreme perspectives, dynamic compositions, and bold camera work placed the audience directly inside the world, strengthening emotional resonance and scene energy.
Design Approach
We fused high-res photography of modern London with bold graphic effects to ground the action in a vibrant, cinematic world. Classic 2D characters were refined to sit seamlessly within this space—preserving their charm while enhancing motion, line work, and color. Every frame was tuned for bold contrast, ensuring clarity and impact. The visual system was built to be modular and reskin-ready, allowing for effortless adaptation across new content and settings.
Outcome & Achievements
Distinctive Style: Successfully fused realism with animation, creating a unique visual identity praised internally and by BBC leadership.
Audience Connection:

Scalable System:
The design pipeline supports quick turnaround for new episodes and marketing assets.
Respectful Reinvention:
Fans of the original series responded positively to the blend of old and new.
